The English Saint Bernard Club Open Show

Saturday 4th August 2007

Judge: Karen Fitzsimmons (Lanleadane)

Thank you to the officers and committee of The English St Bernard Club for inviting me to judge the Open Show.  I was delighted with the entry of 82 dogs and would like to thank all the exhibitors for making it such a wonderful day.  It was pleasing to hear generous applause for all the placed dogs, something which has sadly been lacking at shows recently.

VETERAN (dog or bitch) (3,1)

1.       Deuchar-Fawcett & Swaine-Williams’ Ch. Barandi Spymaster

Nearly 7 years young and still enjoying showing. Shown in excellent condition.  He has a pleasing head with dark eyes and a deep stop.  Good bone and nice tight feet.  Correct shoulder placement and moderate rear angulation.  Moved well.

2.      Lyons’ Snowfordhill Winter Star

Nearly 8 years young and shown in excellent condition.  Has a wonderful benevolent expression and the darkest of eyes.  Plenty of bone and well laid back shoulders. Moved with plenty of drive.  Just a little long cast, which was the deciding factor, as two excellent golden oldies and their owners should be very proud.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (5)

1.       Moore’s Rosiemamy Rhythm of Love at Helmscrest

What a delightful 7 months old puppy.  Presented in excellent condition. Well developed head for one so young.  His skull is broad with an abrupt deep stop.  Lovely dark eyes.  Very well off for bone.  Large well placed shoulders and correct rear angulation.  Deep chest and good spring of rib.   Would prefer him to have slightly tighter feet, but I am sure these will improve.  Moved very well for such a baby and was pleased to award him BPD and eventually BPIS.  Will watch his progress with interest.

2.      Wilson’s Saintjacks Out for Justice.

8 month old puppy who was unlucky to come up against the winner.  Not as mature in head as the winner, but has a pleasing head with a good drop of lip.  Well off for bone.  Correct shoulder placement.  Preferred the rear angulation and movement of the winner.  However, another promising puppy who was well handled and presented.

3.      Lodge & Jowitt’s Moybrick Warm Winter NAF TAF

PUPPY DOG (1)

1.      Thomas’s Finetime Dances with Wolves 9 months old tall smooth boy, who is at that gangly stage and very immature, as smooth coats often are at this age.  He has a pleasing head with dark eyes.  Needs to let down behind, as lacking in rear angulation at present.  Moved OK.

JUNIOR DOG (8,2)

Very strong class and I am sure they will all change places in the future.

1.      Nagrecha’s Carashon Take a Chance to Chandlimore

Impressive young man, who was presented in excellent condition and headed a lovely line up.  Has a pleasing head with a deep abrupt stop and a soft benevolent expression.  His neck is well muscled, which he uses with great effect.  Deep chest and correct spring of rib.    A touch overangulated at the rear, but moves well with plenty of drive from the rear.

2.      Bell & Jeffries’ Neobern Dynamic Desmond

Another impressive young man, who gave the winner a run for his money.  Has a broad well rounded skull with a deep abrupt stop.  Lovely dark eyes.  Well angulated front and rear.  Deep chest, but appears a little wide in front.  Moved very well with drive.  Slightly longer cast than 1 and not as strong in top-line and these were the deciding factors.  However, another very promising boy, who was presented in excellent condition and well handled.

3.      Swaine-William’s Bernegarden’s Ocean Breeze over Wyandra (Imp Nor)

NOVICE DOG (6,2)

1.      Deuchar-Fawcett & Swaine-Williams’ Barandi Grand Central

What a find!  First show for dog and handler and neither of them put a foot wrong! Shown in excellent condition. He has a broad skull with deep abrupt stop.  Short broad muzzle and adequate drop of lip.  He has the darkest of eyes and has the most delightful soft benevolent expression.  Broad deep chest and correct spring of rib.  Well off for bone and correct front and rear angulation.   He had an easy unhurried gait and was so sound on the move.  I was pleased to award him RBD and feel he has a very promising future.

2.      Swaine-Williams’ Bernegarden’s Ocean Breeze over Wyandra (Imp Nor)

Unfortunate to come up against the winner.  Very different in head type to 1.  Has lovely dark eyes and a deep stop.  Short broad muzzle.  I feel his head would look better if his handler did not “string” him up, as this alters his head shape.  Correct shoulder placement and well angulated rear.  Did not move as well as my winner and would benefit from moving at a slower pace.  Shown in excellent condition.

3.      Lane & Nagrecha’s Abbotsbury Volcano with Chandlimore

POST-GRADUATE DOG (7,2)

1.      Deuchar-Fawcett & Swaine-Williams’ Barandi Grand Central

2.      Marsden & Green’s Chandlimore Duke of Marsden

Well presented young man, who is maturing nicely.  Has a pleasing head with broad skull and deep stop.  Short broad muzzle.  Nice dark eyes and has a soft expression.  Well off for bone.  Well laid back shoulders and adequate rear angulation.  Preferred the width of chest of 1.  Moved out well.

3.      Bannister’s Banndean Zulu Dancer

POST-GRADUATE SMOOTH DOG (2)

1.      Lodge & Jowitt’s Moybrick Warm Winter NAF TAF

3rd in Minor Puppy Dog.  Very much the baby of the day.  Super chunky puppy with a well developed head for one so young.  Eyes could be tighter.  Has excellent bone, deep chest and good spring of rib.  Needs to tighten on the move, as one would expect for such a baby.  Thoroughly enjoyed his day and was handled well.  Pleased to award him Best Smooth in Show.

2.      Thomas’ Finetime Dances with Wolves

LIMIT DOG (5,2)

1.      Swain’s Harlesford Hadley

Impressive, upstanding young man, who at 19 months is still not fully mature.  He is a tall substantial dog, who presents a well balanced picture.  He has a pleasing head with broad skull and a deep, abrupt stop.  Dark eyes and broad muzzle, with a good drop of lip.  He has excellent bone.  Deep broad chest and good spring of rib.  Wide well laid back shoulders and correct rear angulation.  Well bodied and very muscular. Very sound on the move and has the correct unhurried easy action.  Presented in excellent condition and I was delighted to award him BD and RBIS.  I am sure he has a very promising career ahead of him.

2.      Lodge & Jowitt’s Sanflax Saints Solid Gold.

Not the size or substance of 1, but was very worthy of his 2nd place.  He has a very pleasing head with deep stop, broad muzzle and dark eyes.  He has a lovely benevolent expression.  Correct shoulder placement, but preferred the rear angulation of 1.  Slightly longer cast than 1.  He was shown in excellent condition. Moved very well.

3.      Lane’s Chandlimore the Challenger with Lanebern

OPEN DOG(5,2)

1.      Wright & Lyon’s Snowfordhill Comet

Well balanced dog, who was shown in excellent condition.  Good head, with deep stop and lovely dark eyes.  Correct shoulder placement.  Would prefer more width and depth of chest.  Good spring of rib.   Correctly angulated hindquarters.  In hard muscular condition.  Excellent topline.  Moved well.

2.      Heath’s Kyslan Special Delivery

Mature dog with a well developed head.  Deep stop, broad muzzle and good drop of lip.  Has the true benevolent expression.  Has massive bone.  Deep chest and good spring of rib.  A little longer cast than 1.  Shown in excellent condition.  Could not match 1 on movement.

3.      Kenmillex Copper Pot

OPEN SMOOTH DOG(1)

1.      Muggleton’s Bernmont Malcolm

Substantial young man, who was shown in good condition.  He has a broad skull with adequate stop and a broad muzzle.  Deep chest and good spring of rib.  Could do with slightly more length of neck to give a more balanced picture.  Correct rear angulation.  Sadly his movement let him down today, as I have seen him move much better.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (11,1)

Large class of babies, all at different stages of maturity, as one would expect.  Some will need a lot of time before they reach their best.

1.      Wilson’s Saintjacks Play the Game

Litter sister to 2nd in Puppy Dog.  Her head still needs time to develop, but she has a good stop and lovely dark eyes.  Well off for bone and has the correct tight feet, which was sadly lacking in a lot of the puppies.  She is well angulated front and rear and she was presented in excellent condition and handled well.  She was the best mover in the class, which won her the 1st place.  Pleased to award her BPB.

2.       Lodge & Jowitt’s Moybrick Sparkle NAF TAF

6 month old baby, who was close up to the winner.  She was more mature in head, but her eyes need to tighten.  Good drop of lip for a baby.  She is very well off for bone.  Correct shoulder placement and well angulated rear.  She moved extremely well for such a chunky baby and this won her place over some much older puppies. Shown in excellent condition.

3.      Millward’s Karmonbel Queen by Lanebern

PUPPY BITCH (1,1)

JUNIOR BITCH (9,1)

Like Junior Dog, this was a very strong class, which bodes well for the future.

1.      Nagrecha’s Carashon Mystic with Chandlimore

It was a very close decision between 1st and 2nd  and  both are super young bitches, who will surely change places many times.  On the day, this bitch won as she was more mature in head.  She has a broad skull with deep abrupt stop and the darkest of eyes.  She is not the biggest of girls and is a little short on the leg, but is well off for bone and has the correct tight feet.  She has a broad deep chest, good spring of rib and correct angulation front and rear.  Once settled, she moved with reach and drive.  Presented in excellent condition and is a natural show girl.

2.      Lyons & Grubb’s Snowfordhill Ice Rose

Just out of puppy and this young lady gave the winner a run for her money! Similar comments apply.  She is a lovely compact bitch with excellent front and rear angulation.  Head not as mature as 1.  Has lovely dark eyes and a sweet expression.

Moved really well.  Shown in excellent condition.  Should have a very promising future ahead of her.

3.      Searcy’s Neobern Angel of Mine

NOVICE BITCH (8,4)

1.      Clare’s Chabanou She’s Snowsense

Reserve place in strong Junior Class.  This is a substantial young lady, who is a born show girl.  She has a broad skull with well defined stop and a broad muzzle.  Her chest is wide and deep and she has a good spring of rib.  Well off for bone.  Good lay back of shoulder and adequate rear angulation.  She is a little long cast, but her topline is correct.  Moved well.

2.      Deuchar-Fawcett’s Barandi Ruby Rocket with Saranbeck

Presents a well balanced picture.  Pleasing head with correct stop and dark eyes.  Well off for bone.  Correct angulation front and rear.  Unfortunately, was in her underwear today, as she decided to leave her partydress at home!  Moved well once settled.

3.      Muggleton’s Bernmont Onya

POST-GRADUATE BITCH (11,4(abs)1(withdrawn))

1.      Poole & Nagrecha’s Poolsway Cool’N Classy

Caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring and did not disappoint when I went over her.  She is so well balanced and shows herself off to advantage.  Her skull is broad with a deep abrupt stop.  Her eyes are lovely and dark and she has the required soft benevolent expression.  She has excellent bone and lovely tight feet. Chest is deep and wide and she has good width throughout.  Excellent spring of rib.

Correct shoulder and rear angulation, presenting a well-balanced picture.  She moved with drive and extension and holds her top-line on the move.  Shown in superb condition and well handled.  I was delighted to award her Best Bitch and then Best in Show.  A very worthy winner.

2.      Schofield’s Chabanou Snow’t But Trouble

Another lovely young lady, who is not the biggest, but presents a well balanced picture.  She has a broad skull with well defined stop and broad muzzle.  Lovely expression.  Very well off for bone.  Deep, broad chest.  Good shoulder placement. Good spring of rib.  Would prefer slightly more rear angulation, but this does not effect her movement.  She is very sound and true when moving.

3.      Deuchar-Fawcett’s Barandi Ruby Rocket with Saranbeck

SPECIAL POST-GRADUATE SMOOTH BITCH (3.1)

1.      Ward’s Snoshire Miss Marple

Tall young lady, who still needs time to mature.  Her head still needs to broaden.  Lovely dark eyes and a sweet expression.  Lovely straight legs.  A little narrow throughout, but just needs time.  Shown in excellent condition.  Moved OK

2.      Bannister’s Olivebranch Cupid Candy at Banndean

This young lady showed everyone what dog showing should be about – FUN!!!

She gave her handler a very hard time, but both thoroughly enjoyed themselves and so did the ringside.  She is a very happy girl, who needs time to mature.

LIMIT BITCH (6,3)

1.      Bannister’s Snowfordhill Dancer at Banndean

A substantial girl, who presents a very pleasing well balanced picture.  She has a broad skull with a deep, abrupt stop.  Good drop of lip.  Very muscular neck.  Deep wide chest with good width throughout.  Well bodied with good spring of rib.  Correct shoulder and rear angulation.  Moved out well with reach and drive.  A very nice bitch.

2.      Thomas’ Finetime Nightshade

Another nice young lady, who has a well developed head.  Broad skull with deep stop. Eyes could be a little darker and tighter. Broad short muzzle and good drop of lip.  Well laid back shoulders. Would prefer more width to chest.  Correct rear angulation.  Presents a well balanced picture.  Unable to assess her movement properly, as she would not co-operate with her handler, which was a real shame.

Just preferred the overall substance and movement of the winner.

3.      Lyons & Grubb’s Snowfordhill Nov Koi

OPEN BITCH (4,1)

1.      Swain & Yates’ Harlesford Village Gossip

I have admired this bitch from the ringside and she did not disappoint when I went over her.  She has the size and substance, which I feel is so important in the breed. She has a strong head with a broad skull, deep abrupt stop and broad muzzle. She has a very pleasing expression.  Her chest is broad and deep and she has an excellent spring of rib.  She has broad well laid back shoulders and correct rear angulation. She was shown in excellent condition and is well muscled throughout.  She moves with an unhurried easy gait with good drive and extension.   I was pleased to award her RBB, just losing out to the Post-Graduate Winner on her top-line, but it was a very close decision.

2.      Bannister’s Banndean Shadow Dancer

Another lovely young lady, who was unlucky to come up against the winner.  She has not got the size or substance of 1, but presents a very well balanced picture.  Not the head of 1, but she has a deep stop and lovely dark eyes.  Well off for bone.  Correct shoulder placement and broad chest.  Correct spring of rib.  Correct rear angulation. Had the better topline and moved extremely well with drive and extension.

3.      Lyons & Grubb’s Snowfordhill Nov Sparkle
